Introduction

Cities provide opportunities, connect people, and often make everyday life more practical. But in order to fully take advantage of the great potential of our cities, it is vital to find your calmness between the chaoses. A home that brings peace and slows down the face-paced life is a perfect place to come back to. 

Domus 17 is a modern house in Sector 128, Noida designed & envisioned by Chaukor Studio. It is calming, tranquil, and peaceful in terms of its interiors. Bright colors are incorporated, only to enhance certain corners subtly.

The clients are a working couple and required an easy-to-maintain house with a functional and aesthetic design. People seek more serene and minimalistic sanctuaries to come home to that would keep them less stressed. The combination of functionality and beauty always harmonizes a space.

Concept

The Danish word "hygge" refers to a cozy, warm atmosphere that fosters socialization and a feeling of contentment or well-being. Hygge is communicated by Domus 17; it evokes a sense of security and comfort to unwind and relax. Sometimes in life, doing the simplest things makes you happy, relaxed, and renewed. The use of color, texture, furniture, and other small details creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

Getting the right design style for this project also requires reducing clutter. Clean lines and wide spaces are the key components of this design concept. But if your household is busy and you have trouble achieving that minimalist look.

Furthermore, sustainability is frequently emphasized in the design. It's a terrific green decor trend because natural materials and straightforward designs are so common. Since more and more customers favor environmentally friendly design.

Public Area

The ground floor opens up into the dining hall which connects the kitchen and family lounge. This whole area is an open and free-flowing area that connects all these public spaces together. It has functional segregation and is based on open format living. A tint of texture is added to the walls to bring a little drama to the whole space. The color tones are more whites and neutrals.

The kitchen covers a large area and invites lots of daylight to illuminate the whole space. The cabinets chosen are of light color to blend the whole interiors together. The dark grey tones of the kitchen slab and the wall on the working station break the monotony by creating contrast and activating the Scandinavian palettes of the interior.

Various artworks are used to draw attention to the walls. It makes the whole place look more colorful and introduces a ton of texture. 

Private Area

Your bedroom is the only place you can unwind after a stressful day, no matter where you reside in the world. The bedroom should always feel like a haven, thus such a warm and cozy design is ideal! Uncluttered surfaces and a less-is-more philosophy are hallmarks of the whole project. The clean, uncomplicated, and understated design will produce a tranquil and calming ambiance.

Conclusion

The goal of this project was to highlight a feeling of home; where you can relax and embark a feeling of gratitude and comfort. The simple interiors are integrated while embracing the great and open outdoors which impart tons of daylight.

Introduction

The house derives its name from the video game of the 90s - Tetris and is designed as an interlocking composition of many smaller volumes. The house is situated in Greater Noida and is built on a plot size of 200sqm.

Built on one of the middle plots of the row housing, the house shares both of its side walls with its neighbors leaving only the front side and rear side for light and ventilation. This being a major limitation, the overall volume of the house is broken into smaller parts and staggered to maximize the external surface area. The home front elevation thus provides opportunities to create window openings and doors not just on the front but also side faces of the house so that all interior spaces receive ample daylight and proper ventilation. This was further accentuated with a light shaft made right at the center of the house that also sports a double-height vertical green wall.

Modern Front Elevation Design

Staggering of volumes also provided the overall structure to have many open-outdoor spaces at various heights and levels. These levels were used to create built-in planters at many places while also as landscape terraces. The staggering further allowed many smaller spaces to be formed in the front part of the house thus providing a very distinctive style and an interesting character to the overall form. As the neighboring plots share the side walls with the house, the staggering also allowed for breaks with the adjoining buildings. This allowed the volumes and material finishes to bend thus creating a perceptive depth to the exterior elevation design. The result is a fresh approach to the modern house front elevation design which maximizes light & ventilation & created an interesting play in the elevation façade of the house .

Planning & Architecture of the House

House is designed for a family of four members thus the requirement was to create a spacious living space with ample daylight, ventilation, and also opportunities for landscape terraces for outdoor experiences.

While the living spaces of the house are planned on two floors in a duplex format, the overall experience of social bonding is kept very tight and compact. A very large double-height space is created in the central living area in which all the private bedrooms open up or look into (from the upper floor). This allows all the members of the family to gather in the central space more frequently while maintaining their private individual spaces. Thus, this floor becomes the most active part of the house.

The public area (Living / Dining) is planned as a fluid open space working in conjunction with an open kitchen.

The swing seating included in the living area.

Internal stairs connecting the two floors are planned right in the center of this public space to maintain very strong connectivity between the two.

The upper floor of the duplex is primarily comprised of private spaces and bedrooms with their private terraces and balconies. All the three rooms on the upper floor look into the central double-height space thus giving a strong sense of social connection.

For better connectivity, double-height space and a floating walkway are designed in the center that overlaps the living areas with the private rooms.

Slotted house is a resultant of a reductive or a subtractive approach while creating the overall design of the house. It is a very modern take on the design process wherein the built volume is considered as a singular entity; eventually from which various volumes are removed (subtracted). This kind of design process wherein smaller volumes are removed from a larger entity to create distinct shapes and forms is called a reductive approach to design. In contrast to the conventional design process wherein the overall building design is achieved through the process of addition, the reductive approach is much more radical and results into much more contemporary and un-conventional design forms.

The covered terrace at the First Floor level (here referred as the Slot) takes the primary focus and forms the most crucial part of design. It is an overarching design form that gives the fundamental shape and a larger sense of identity to the house. Large window openings and green planters are built into the Slot that give a sense of an open expansive green space on the first floor. When seen from the exterior, the Slotted house gives an appearance to be a floating volume above the boundary wall and connecting with the surroundings. The material texture of the Slot is kept most distinct to create contrast and make it stand out in the larger volume. Slotted house is a very modern and contemporary take on residence design.
